FORT CENTRALE ZUCCARELLO

Driving down State Road No. 582, San Bernardo, coming from Albenga, we find Fort Centrale di Zuccarello, approximately a kilometre from the homonymous town, just past Martinetto. It used to be a true Defence fort, because the state road actually passed through its guard, which was astride of the road. Due to the widening of the road and the mining of the nearby quarry, the building has been nearly destroyed. It is hard to imagine how the Fort used to be, but we do know about the general characteristics of forts built at the end of the 1800s. This had a lunette shape, and was surrounded by a moat, with casement artillery and with caponiers at the corners and at the front of the perimeter. The building stood in the area now used by the quarry, to the orographical left of the Neva stream. On the eastern side of the building, a covered corridor with embrasures  originated. This (once the water and road were passed), connected with the guard a astride of the road. The road was interrupted by two drawbridges.

Today, only part of the guard remains, with its moat hidden by vegetation, and a few metres of the covered corrido, which is still in good condition.
