LODRINO SUPERIORE BATTERY
From the fork in the road
to Fort Lodrino Inferiore,
we continue along the old military road. After about ten metres, on the right
side of the road we can find the ruins of a detached battery (which was originally
armed with 4 cannons, separated by underground ready lockers, hidden by the thick vegetation. The people
of the area, say that this small fortification
exploded during the Second World War. They don’t know if it was sabotaged or
bombed. These same ready lockers can no longer be accessed. Among the ruins, we can still run into a
relic here and there.
Continuing along the road
(which in some periods can be driven down with an off-road vehicle), after
about 500 metres, we run into a steep road leading to the Lodrino Superiore
Battery. The old military road, can no
longer be driven on. It can only be walked down because it has become a tight path. It still has some of the original cobblestones. Nearing the summit, we can note
some containing chipped walls , which indicate that we are nearing the
fortification. It can be reached by foot in 20 minutes and was a support
battery as well as being used as a look-out. Access to the inside was possible
by crossing a draw bridge; now we can enter by passing the ruined wall. The
edifice was armed with 4 cannons, and had some small
barracks on one
floor for the guard. These (now almost completely destroyed), have windows and embrasures. Beside these we can still find the
now confused traces of one of the two cannon emplacements, each
with its relative ready
locker. A small hill dominates the edifice, and behind
which we can still find the remains of another ready locker and relative artillery emplacements. The edifices were built using the local stones.
Lodrino Superiore
Battery can be seen with Fort Settepani of the Melogno Defence.
