FORT
SCARATO
Of the three “twin” edifices, Fort Scarato was the only one which was accessible (at least up until two years ago).
This edifice can only be reached by foot, and by following an unpaved road which branches off, to the left, approximately 10 metres from Fort Tagliata. Fort Tagliata is on State Road No. 542: Pontinvrea. It is completely surrounded by a deep moat, which has now been invaded by vegetation.
It is on two floors. The access is defended by the drawbridge (of which only the mettalic structures remain). It is on the first floor, and still has its original door, though it is slightly unhinged. On the architrave of the main door (like in the other two twin edifices) a marble tablet is placed. On this tablet the name of the fortification is engraved. The facilities as well as the rooms were on the main floor, while the powder magazines, the store rooms and the ammunition ready lockers, (which were transported to the fortified casements by elevator) were on the floor below.
At a slightly superior level a 120 A Gruson cupula cannon, with an armoured gun carriage was located. Today this embankement (like in the other two twin edifices, Forts Bruciato and Moglie) naturally, no longer has any of its artillery, and was blown up, it seems during the Second World War..
The internal rooms are now in very bad condition, due to the Fort’s easy access. On some of the walls, the writing of the soldiers still remains.
